How To Make Sure You Don’t Overdo It At OTF

As Obsessives, we focus a lot on class count.

We love seeing that number climb and we love the brag boards for social media (and OTF Obsessed!) that come with it.

At the same time, you must be careful to not overdo it.

This week, I came across a post in an OTF Facebook group recently from a guy named Kyle. He found OTF in September 2023 and, like a lot of us, immediately went all-in.

But Kyle didn't just go all-in … he went double all-in:

"Most days I did two classes a day — two Tread 50s, one Tread 50/one strength, one 2G/one strength — whatever combo I felt like doing that day."

For two and a half years. Kyle thought that was fine because he thought he was fine .

Turns out he wasn’t.

A nerve flare-up during a trip to Atlanta eventually sent him down a road that included an urgent care and a MRI. The diagnosis was a weak left hip and a disc between L5 and S1 pushing on an inflamed nerve.

The fix from the doctor was an easy one. Kyle should just run every other day.

As soon as he dialed it back, Kyle reported that his running got better. He posted faster times and longer distances including a PR 5.25 miles in a Tread 50.

“Sometimes less really IS more,” Kyle concluded.

So what does overtraining actually look like?

The tricky part is that overtraining doesn't always feel like injury.

It can exhibit itself in a persistent or nagging fatigue. It can look like declining performance. It can even hit your immune system so you’re getting sick more easily and more often.

You think you’re being tough by pushing through and putting another notch on your OTF app, when the reality is that rest is a better reward for both mind and body.

OTF’s trademark intensity only works when recovery is part of the equation. And I would say that it’s really not even about listening to your body as much as it is making sure your schedule has rest days (though the former is important, too).

Most of us who fall in love with OTF make some version of this same mistake. The workouts are addicting and there’s nothing like the feeling of walking out of that studio with an hour of work under your belt.

But in order to have a long and healthy run at OTF, it’s important that you don’t overdo it.
