How To Keep OTF Fresh
For most of us, Orangetheory has become an important routine in our lives.
But sometimes routines can get stale. I read a few posts this week from OTF members saying they’ve been feeling a bit stale when they step under the orange lights.
Maybe it’s just because we’re headed into the dog days of summer for these people, but I don’t think that’s an uncommon feeling when you’re stacking workout after workout and year after year.
I think it’s important to recognize when this is happening. Not only does it keep you from the danger of taking a longer vacation than necessary, it also keeps up your effort at the gym.
Here are six things that have worked for me over the years when boredom creeps in:
Change your class time: Your mind and body can crave variety. If you always go at 5 am, try 5 pm for a week instead. We all have schedule limitations so it doesn’t have to be permanent, but a week walking in someone else’s shoes can be invigorating. (Plus you can ask “Who are all these people?” while they’re doing the same about you.)
Change your spot in the studio. For my first 300-400 classes, I was a regular on the far end of our studio. But for the last few years, I’ve been a trusty resident of Treadmill No. 1. Our studio is so big that it’s basically a different zip code with different vibes and different things to see. It works for me and that’s become “my spot,” but I do enjoy the times I arrive at class late and get to revisit my old stomping grounds.
Start out on the tread if you’re a floor person (or vice versa): This goes hand in hand with the first two.
Make A Point Of Bringing a Friend: It’s a scientific fact that each Orangetheory workout goes faster when you’re there with a friend. Not only will asking someone to tag along change things up, it could also net you a sweet referral prize if they decide to stick with it.
Give yourself a mini challenge: Not a Hell Week. Just a personal one. Can you hit 12 classes in a month? Can you average a certain amount of splat points or calories per class for four straight weeks? Can you start lifting heavier than you usually do? Having a small target in the back of your head changes how you show up. (It’s why I’ve always loved Marathon Month.)
Take a break: Hey, sometimes you just need one. And I think summer is always a good time to do this because there’s so many things to be doing outside. Running. Biking. Playing in a rec league sport at the park district. Plus absence always makes your orange heart grow fonder. You’ll be ready to go back to OTF with a fresh mindset before you know it.
