Review: The OTF Hyrox class
I finally took my first Hyrox workout yesterday morning.
I’ve never done a Hyrox race, nor is it in my immediate plans.
But I am absolutely Hyrox curious.
My studio hasn’t offered as many Hyrox times as others — we’re still only on Week 3 of the 12-week plan — so I’ve been patiently waiting to try the partnership that’s been my most-viewed OTF Obsessed post to date.
My TL;DR review: I loved it, it flew by and I’ll be back.
Is it for you?
Let’s get into it.
I took the 2G 60-minute version and the class was almost full.
The energy in the room was great and everyone seemed locked into the challenge.
I was a little surprised this template wasn’t filled with a lot of switches, like you’d experience in a Hyrox class. Instead, it was structured like your typical 2G with a warmup period and two 23.5-minute blocks.
Here’s how it all broke down:
Treadmill Block: Run-row endurance
Run or powerwalk 0.65 miles
Row 500 meters
Repeat until time
Floor Block 1 (10 minutes)
Full step up to knee drive - 5x each side
Split stance S/A high row - 5x each side
Swing lunge - 5x each side
TRX Bridge Row - 10x
Floor Block 2 (11.5 minutes)
Three timed rounds
30 seconds broad jump to shuffle
10 seconds rest
60 seconds Farmer’s march in place with dumbbells
20 seconds rest
90 seconds Ultimate Burpee
30 seconds rest, then repeat
Run-rows are my favorite Orangetheory feature, so I loved this hour.
I burned about 10 percent more calories than usual and felt great walking out of the studio. What I really enjoyed was the change of pace and the opportunity to do some floor exercises that haven’t been staples in recent regular templates.
I wasn’t drained by any means and even thought about staying for a Tread 50 afterward.
For those reasons, I’d recommend anyone give a Hyrox class a try. It’s certainly not as scary as it may sound at first.
What I’m curious to know is how actual Hyrox participants have received the classes? The templates seem like a great “In case of emergency, take class” for those training for a Hyrox race, but it’s hard for me to picture it as a reasonable substitute for the real thing.
At any rate, I’m glad I was able to try it out and I’m looking forward to the next one.

I have at least two OTF twins who also reached 750 classes last month. Big congrats to Jessica A. and Bob M.!

• Shoutout to Missy D. for a 0.98 power walking PR on the 12-minute run for distance!
“4.9 mph for 11 minutes and 5.1 for the final 30 seconds. I keep track of how I accomplish each PR so I know what kind of effort I need to put into the challenge the next time it rolls around... I want to hit a mile next time, and I KNOW that it is possible! I can do hard things!!
